ALG leads TMA redesign of Buenos Aires

ALG, teaming with DFS Aviation Services, IDS AirNav and Tetra Tech, has started the most ambitious project in Argentina in terms of airspace design for their entire history. In contract with EANA, the national Air Navigation Service Provider, the project aims to perform a full redesign of one of the most complex and busiest airspace structures in South America: the BAIRES Terminal Area (TMA). The TMA currently includes seven controlled aerodromes, including commercial, general aviation and military airports, and manages nearly 50% of the entire aircraft movements in Argentina.

The BAIRES TMA will benefit from the introduction of Performance Based Navigation (PBN) procedures and satellite navigation

Increased safety, capacity and efficiency, while reducing emissions and noise footprints are the basic pillars driving the project.  The new concept of airspace, based on satellite navigation, expects to satisfy the increasing demand in a safe and sequenced manner. Air traffic controllers and pilots will benefit from an important workload reduction, which is the natural consequence after the implementation of the new instrument flight procedures. Accessibility and situational awareness – for both controllers and pilots – are expected to increase; while delays and diversions are expected to decrease.

The project, formally launched on August 26-27, has engaged the key stakeholders involved. Civilian and military the air traffic controllers (including representatives from Uruguay Flight Information Region), commercial airlines (Aerolíneas Argentinas, Austral, Flybondi, JetSmart, Norwegian Argentina), IATA, the Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina) and representatives of General Aviation expressed their support to the project.

“The project we start now is a milestone for Argentine aviation and will enable us to manage the foreseen growth in air traffic over the next 20 years” said Gabriel Giannotti, General Manager and President of EANA, during the kick-off meeting. Spanning three years, the project expects to provide EANA with one of the most modern airspace structures in the world.
